Hats off to new pre-raceday fashion competition

Durban – With the delectable assortment of headwear towering above the crowd of punters and socialites at Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event, the driving force behind the Vodacom Durban July fashion programme has launched a new national pre-raceday fashion competition for 2010 allowing hat enthusiasts and milliners alike to showcase their wares.

A hat is no longer the functional piece of your ensemble used as a sun visor or saviour from the rain, it has now developed the ability to attract more attention than the being it adorns and some would go so far as to say it counts more than the outfit itself.

“It’s a Blooming Great Day” is the theme for this year’s raceday and the inspiration which designers need to explore before settling on their final design.

“An old hat with stuff shoved on is just boring,” said Cape designer Malcolm Kluk. “Don’t necessarily match your hat colour to your outfit and don’t think that last year’s fedora with a new ribbon is acceptable.”

Kluk continued by making reference to the many contemporary ways of wearing headpieces from alice bands and fascinators to fantasy creations. “Be inventive, but too much is too much!” he added.

There is also an abundant supply of decorative pieces available to embellish your design, ranging from feathers, fabrics, beads and more, your options are endless.

“Be careful your hat isn’t overdone, as this year’s theme could lend itself to going crazy, especially with an abundant supply of fake flowers!” said Head of Fashion at Durban University of Technology, George Vorster.

Vorster explained that hats are created to complement an outfit, rather than being a form of fancy dress. “You don’t want to look like a Christmas tree on raceday!”

“When you don’t know what you are looking at, the hat or the garment, then it’s too much, or your partner is forced to walk six metres away from you,” laughed Vorster.

The overall winner will receive R5000 in cash and a piece of jewellery from the Fresh Flower Collection from Mark Gold Jewels to the value of R25 000, the first runner up will receive R3000 and the second runner up R2000.

The deadline for storyboard entries in the Vodacom Durban July Extraordinary Hat Competition is Tuesday, 15 June at 10h00 for entries in KwaZulu-Natal and storyboards need to be delivered to Tiffany Prior: ICE MODELS, 42 Lennox Rd, Greyville, Durban, 4001. 2010 Vodacom Durban July theme

"IT’S A BLOOMING GREAT DAY"

Plant a seed of good fortune,
In the garden of your mind.
Gather design, reap style,
Till it’s one of a kind.

Take a chance on wild,
Exotic if you must.
The flowers of our land,
Sub-tropical or dust.

A mixed bouquet,
In the early light of day.
Or maybe one brilliant bud,
Standing proud is the way.

Indigenous is ingenious,
A good bet to be seen.
Recycling’s one way,
Another is ‘think green’.

In a garden of colour,
One contest stands high.
A blooming great race,
The Vodacom Durban July.
