Bouman wins again in Billy The Bums Surf Ski Challenge
Durban - Ace paddler Matt Bouman wins Billy The Bums Surf Ski Challenge on
Friday night which formed race nine of the popular Varsity College Marine
Surf Ski Series in superb racing conditions.
Bouman took the lead from
the start yet held a watchful eye over U23 World Marathon Champ Grant van der
Walt who was coming in fast from behind.
"I'm trying to stay on top of things," said
Bouman. "It was quite bumpy out there which was great for me considering I
had Grant (van der Walt) chasing me and I know he hates it when it's bumpy."
The series leader powered
to the finish to claim the victory and was followed by Van der Walt who came
second a mere 30 seconds behind and third position was taken by Marc
Holtzhausen.
Bouman is currently working towards the world
cup season and has his eye on the Dunlop Durban Surf Ski World Cup as well as
the Surf Ski Euro Challenge to be held in Spain on 1 May.
Donna Winter bagged herself a win in the ladies
race whilst cementing herself a position on the series podium. "It was a
great race but I still had to work hard," said Winter. "I was lucky enough to
get some fantastic runs on the way back to the finish which is always fun."
In the coming weeks Winter will be putting in
some extra training to reach her goal and head to the Surf Ski Euro Challenge
in Spain.
Daryl Bartho and younger brother Brett claimed
yet another doubles title on Friday night. Just seconds behind them was
Oliver Burn and series leader Michelle Eder who opted to compete in the
doubles race after taking home the title of all but one of the current series
race she has competed in. Siblings Mark and Angelique Mulder followed in
third.
Rising starlet Kylie Winterburn claimed the
title in the ladies short course. Having only paddled for the past two years
Winterburn has emphasised her commitment to the sport and is eagerly awaiting
the Varsity College SA Schools Surf Ski Champs to be held on 9 April.
"My current goal has been to improve my
technique and shorten the gap between myself and my competitors rather than
merely compete," said Winterburn. "But I must say I'm looking forward to the
Eastern and Western Cape schools coming up to compete in the SA Schools in a
few weeks time."
The final race of the series, the Varsity College SA Schools Surfski
Championships takes place
on Friday evening 9 April at 5:30 from Ushaka Beach.
