Bouman tightens strangle-hold on surf ski
series title
Durban - Powerhouse Matt Bouman kept a firm grasp on his position as series leader
by claiming the title in
the sixth leg of the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series in gloomy
overcast conditions
on Friday evening
at Ushaka beach.
The make up
of the race was heavily affected by various series regulars opting to complete
in the Global Trader Drak Challenge taking place this weekend in Underberg.
The race
format
allows paddlers the option of a short 4km one lap or long 8km two lap race
from Ushaka to North Beach and back. A tough South Westerly left competing
paddlers with technical conditions and winds blowing at between 15 and 20
knots.
Bouman has
continue to show superior abilities in the popular series races, having taken home five of
the six races in the current season.
Quinton
Rutherford and Oscar Chalupsky tussled for second spot as they were closing
in at the finish at Ushaka beach, which ended with Chalupsky taking second and Rutherford
following in third position after having to maneuver around a double ski
that got between them and the finish line.
Rising junior
star Kylie Winterburn stole the show in the ladies race coming in on top. The
short course title was claimed by Gary Uys.
Current double leaders Herman
Chalupsky and Andre Pohl were forced to pulled out of the race early on due
to rudder problems, which left room for Varsity College Canoe Club mixed
doubles duo of Angelique and Mark Mulder to take home the doubles title.
The seventh race of the Varsity College Marine Surf Ski Series takes place
next Friday evening 5 March at 5:30 from Ushaka Beach.
