Matt
Bouman extends his surfski series reign
Durban - Matt Bouman entrenched his position at the top of the Varsity
College Marine Surfski Series rankings with another emphatic victory in the
fast paced Sunday Tribune Surfski Challenge on Friday night.
Bouman took full advantage of the mild conditions and the absence of some of
the elite racers who have consistently kept him under pressure in the series
to romp home to a two minute solo victory. his fourth in the series.
There was a thrilling five boat dice for second place that was won
impressively by junior marathon world champion Brandon van der Walt from
Quinton Rutherford and Ollie Burn, in conditions that lent themselves to
bunch riding and very quick times over the two lap 8km course.
Amanzimtoti ace Michelle Eder consolidated her position at the top of the
female rankings with a stunning performance that saw her finish seventh
overall, and almost two minutes clear of her nearest challenger Donna Winter,
with plucky schoolgirl Jenna Ward wrapping up an excellent third in the
overall women's race.
The season's form doubles crew of Herman Chalupsky and Andre Pohl led the
field over the two lap course and gradually pulled away to post a two minute
victory over the brother-and-sister crew of mark and Ange Mulder, who in turn
downed the crew of Wayne Ashford and Steve Atkinson in the closing stages of
the race.
"We were
paddling a new boat, which made it quite exciting," said Chalupsky, who's
partnership with Andre Pohl has not been beaten in two years of the Varsity
College Marine Surf Ski Series.
"Matt Bouman is in great shape, and if anything it looked like he was just
playing with the other top guys in the singles," he added.
"It was a classic evening to be out on the water. Very forgiving and easy or
the novices, and a great way to build up a thirst for a few beers
afterwards," said Chalupsky.
The popular short course race was won by Tiaan de Klerk, while the mixed
double crew of Shelley Gould and Nicholas Sacco.
Sunday Tribune sports editor Simon Osler made his series debut, paddling with
seasoned Durban North racer Barry Lewin, and enjoyed the superb racing
conditions.
The sixth race of the Varsity College Marine Surf Ski Series takes place
next Friday evening 26 February at 5:30 from Ushaka Beach.
