The Cows invite riders to join their Tour Durban 'herd'

Durban - With another big field of serious and social cyclists entered for the aQuellé Tour Durban presented by Bridge Fund Managers on Sunday 29 April, The Cows are planning to make their mark on the 25th anniversary of the iconic Durban race and are inviting anyone sharing the passion for cycling and supporting charities to join them on the day, either on the road or lending a helping hand.

Founded ten years ago as a grouping of sport enthusiasts committed to raising money for the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation while they take part in a wide variety of mass participation sporting events, The Cows have become a feature of the aQuellé Tour Durban in their distinctive black-and-white cow costumes.

“We love getting involved with the aQuellé Tour Durban because they have been so good to us over the years,” said convener of The Cows in KZN Iris Varty.

“It is an event heavily centred around charity and its support for the Domino Foundation, so we really encourage as many people as possible to ride it,” she added.

“The Cows will be manning the water point on the M4 near the Hypermarket, which you can be sure will be very festive,” promised Varty, who will be riding the 100km race on a tandem with her daughter Lauren.

The race has reserved a special batch in the 45km Fun Ride for supporters of The Cows, who can nominate to start in this batch in the online entry process via Cycle Events.

“The 45km Fun Ride is such a do-able race! We really want to see as many moms and dads, brothers and sisters, fit or unfit people on the road.

“We start together and almost all of us stay together on the road, and the humour and banter along the way is fantastic,” said Varty.

The Cows will also be running the fun Kids Race at the Moses Mabhida People Park track at 11am on raceday, aimed at the children under ten years of age.

Entry is free and, and kids are welcome to ride on any bike or trike, accompanied by their parents if needed. They will each get a Hubertos ice cream and an aQuellé cold drink at their own dedicated water station.

“Get involved. Be part of something special!” she urged even casual or part time cyclists. “Your R50 donation to The Cows make a difference, and you are also supporting the Domino Foundation simply by taking part.”

The race is always a platform for brisk sales of the popular range of The Cows merchandise and Varty promised that anyone wearing a Cows t-shirt bought at the event will be able to relax and enjoy a cold drink at The Cows gazebo at the finish.

She added that every year high school pupils looking for community service hours get involved with The Cows at the aQuellé Tour Durban, either helping at a water point or helping at the kids race, and The Cows will once again accommodate as many scholars looking to help as possible.

The aQuellé Tour Durban, presented by Bridge Fund Managers, takes place on Sunday 29 April 2018. More information can be found at www.tourdurban.co.za
