Corporates gear up for Tour Durban Fun Ride

Durban - With just over a week to go to the close of entries for the 2017 aQuellé Tour Durban, presented by Bridge Fund Managers, many businesses in KwaZulu-Natal are completing their entries to enable them to ride the 45km Fun Ride in the company colours.

For many, the outing is an annual team builder, while some businesses use it as an opportunity to ride in support of a charity, more often than not for the Domino Foundation - the race's official beneficiary.

For others it is a chance to make the most of the sublime KZN autumn weather.

"For us, riding the 45km race at the aQuellé Tour Durban was a really great experience," said Wayne Fyvie, who through his business Green Office, has been a regular corporate participant in the event.

"It actually grew, year on year," the former Sharks flanker said. "In the beginning it was a bit like pulling teeth to get people from the office to ride, but once they had done it they all came back to the office raving about the race and encouraging all their friends to do it the following year.

"We always rode the 45km race as a team and helped each other out." he said. "Yes there are one of two that are a challenge, but the beauty about this race is that the 45km race is very do-able, even for those that don't train a lot," said Fyvie.

Fyvie and his colleagues made a habit of being ready to help the hand cyclists on the tougher hill climbs or to help any other riders battling with problems.

"That made it such a great team-building exercise," said the former Springbok star. "Yes, a few of us had to jump off our bikes to push the quad-cyclists on a hill or two, but that made it special.

"To be able to share in that exhilarating sense of freedom as you freewheel down the hill alongside a hand cyclist is amazing," said Fyvie.

Members of staff and clients of presenting sponsor Bridge Fund Managers have also signed up to ride the aQuellé Tour Durban Fun Ride

Bridge FM will also host a post-race chill zone for staff and the more than fifty clients taking part in the main and fun rides.

The Bridge FM peloton will include Paul Stewart, the Executive Director at Bridge Fund Managers, who is excited to make his debut in the 105km race.

“I love cycling and being a Capetonian I am keen to tour around Durban and see places I haven’t see yet from the ‘relative’ comfort of my racing saddle!” said Stewart.

Bridge FM is the new presenting sponsor for the event and in a first for the race has introduced a race category with prize money for hand cyclists.

Entries for the 45km Fun Ride close at 11pm on Monday 17 April.

The 2017 aQuellé Tour Durban, presented by Bridge Fund Managers, takes place on Sunday 30 April. More information can be found at www.tourdurban.co.za
