2015 champ campaigns abroad in 2017

Durban – After ending a five year stranglehold on the race by the dominant local team, 2015 winner of the aQuellé Tour Durban, presented by Bridge Fund Managers, Ryan Gibbons has gone on to enjoy prolific success internationally, and will be watching the race from Europe on Sunday 30 April.

Then racing in the Europcar car team colours, Gibbons pulled off a tactical coup in the races unique double-back closing kilometre to deny Nolan Hoffman and his team a sixth win in succession.

Since then Gibbons has been snapped up by the Dimension Data team, and in February he sprinted to his first pro victory at the Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia, and will be a key member of the team preparing for European season that climaxes with the Tour de France.

Gibbons said he was keeping a close eye on the form of the domestic teams and predicted a rider in the Road Cover colours would be holding aloft the trophy he cradled in 2015.

"I think Road Cover will be looking to keep their title and have two cards to play with Clint Hendricks and Brad Potgieter," said Gibbons.

"However BCX will be motivated as they've not won for quite some time and if it comes to a pure sprint, Nolan Hoffman will be hard to beat," he added.

Gibbons said that while the cream, of the domestic road racers will be squaring off in the balmy autumn Durban weather, he will be racing in the European spring with the formidable Dimension Data outfit.

"I'll be in Switzerland at the Tour of Romandie," confirmed Gibbons.

"It's usually where the Tour de France main contenders start testing the form so it's going to be brutal!" he added.

He wished the riders taking part in the 2017 aQuellé Tour Durban good luck for the iconic Durban classic.

Gibbons enjoys widespread support from the South African road cycling community, as he continues to showcase the level of elite talent that emerges from the domestic competitive ranks.

With the 2017 Cape Town Cycle Tour cancelled due to high winds on the day, this may well sharpen the resolve of several of the major teams keen to add a major South African classic to their trophy cabinets in Durban at the end of April.

The 2017 aQuellé Tour Durban, presented by Bridge Fund Managers, takes place on Sunday 30 April. More information can be found at
