Winston Park schoolboy honoured

Durban - The weekly assembly at the Winston Park Primary School in Gillitts gave seven year old Tyler Sinclair a standing ovation when he was presented with a Superhero certificate from The Cows for raising over R10 000 for the childhood cancer charity CHOC.

After being exposed to the treatment of children battling the disease, Sinclair took it upon himself to start raising money to ease their burden.

He started with chores around the house, ranging from cleaning up his room and helping around the house to tidying up after their dogs in the garden. His chores then grew to phoning as many friends and family connections as possible, and in two weeks he had raised R10 005 for the foundation.

The modest youngster was the school hero when he was called onto the stage at the weekly school assembly and was presented with a 'Superhero' certificate from The Cows organiser Iris Varty, together with his own set of the distinctive black and white cow patterned cycling kit used by The Cows.

"It is an amazing amount of money to be raised by someone so young," said Varty.

"He understands the journey that a cancer sufferer goes through, and he decided on his own to try and make a difference to the young boys and girls battling this disease.

"In effect he has raised enough to support four children at CHOC House for a month," said Varty. "That means that they can be close to their parents and siblings while they undergoing the cancer treatment which makes a massive difference to very young kids," she added.

Celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, The Cows raise funds for the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation through their participation in major sporting events like the 94.7 Cycle Tour, aQuellé Tour Durban, the Comrades Marathon and the aQuellé Midmar Mile.
