The Stables Wine Estate releases Comrades Marathon range

Durban – The Stables Wine Estate has launched a range of wines for the Comrades marathon that takes place this weekend, establishing a partnership between two brands that are distinctive to KwaZulu-Natal.

The three wines, called Roadrunner Red, Wally’s White and Polly Shortts Pink, will be available for the first time at the Comrades Expo that spans the three days preceding the 84th running of the 89km race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

“This proves that we are in it for the long run,” quipped The Stables Wine Estate winemaker Tiny van Niekerk.

The Roadrunner red is a blend of 60% Pinotage and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured in new, second and third full oak barrels for 12 months, providing a full bodied red wine with spicy, gamey and smokey flavours.

Wally’s White has been named after iconic Comrades Marathon runner Wally Haywood, and is a crisp, unwooded white blend made up principally of Chardonnay, with 17% Sauvignon Blanc, and has attractive grassy tomes with elements of granadilla and pineapple fruit.

The distinctive salmon coloured rose Polly Shortts Pink is named after the notorious hill on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg, and is made from Pinotage grapes, and offers hints of strawberry flavours off a crisp dry palate.

“It will be an ideal way for runners to celebrate completing the Comrades Marathon on Sunday by raising a glass or two of their preferred Comrades wine,” said van Niekerk.

The wine will be available for tasting for the duration of the Comrades Expo at the Durban Exhibition Centre.
