The Stables Wine
Estate scoops top KZN Business Award
Durban – The Stables Wine Estate scooped a premier award at the KZN Top
Business Portfolio Awards at the ICC on Thursday night, adding further
momentum to the expanding wine industry in KwaZulu-Natal.
The prestigious Partnership award recognised the contribution made by
the collaboration between The Stables Wine Estate, and the Gijima
business development initiative that facilitates funding from the
European Union.
“We are thrilled!” said Judy Van Niekerk, owner and winemaker at The
Stables Wine Estate. “This celebrates what can be achieved by
collaborations between the public and private sector, through the Gijima
initiative. This award is great for the KZN wine industry from an
international perspective.”
“There is a real surge of interest from around the province in
developing the wine industry, and in particular the unique possibilities
for producing high quality Method Champenoise wines in this region,” Van
Niekerk added.
“Through the KZN Winegrowers Association we are working at establishing
a wine industry that is sustainable and has good growth potential, by
working with major players both inside the province and further afield”
Van Niekerk added.
While there are several producers making wine in the KZN Midlands, a
number of newcomers to the industry re exploring the establishment of
vines elsewhere in the province, including the north coast of
KwaZulu-Natal.
“The wine industry not only has the capacity to create employment
opportunities on a significant scale in KwaZulu-Natal, but also offers
huge tourism potential and a new drawcard to visitors to this region,”
said Van Niekerk.
Earlier in the year The Stables Wine Estate won a Tourism KZN Special
Recognition Award for the contribution they have made to the tourism
offering in the province.
The estate has rapidly expanded it’s range of entirely KwaZulu-Natal
grown and made wine during the past eighteen months, including KZN
Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc wines that have already won national
awards.
