Tony Cox to kick start Grape Crushing Festival weekend

Nottingham Road – Iconic acoustic guitarist Tony Cox will kick start the weekend-long Grape Crushing Festival at The Stables Wine Estate in Nottingham Road with an evening of food, wine and mesmerising music.

Cox thrived in the unique environment of the vineyards of the wine estate when her performed at the inaugural Grape Crushing Festival last year, and jumped at the chance to play at The Stables again this year.

Since his performance at The Stables last year, Cox has toured locally and abroad, and enjoyed a lengthy sell-out tour through Canada, where he has accumulated a substantial fan base.

“We have moved the Crush Festival to the Easter weekend, in response to requests from families want to make a weekend of it,” said Marketing Director and winemaker Judy Van Niekerk. “The turnout last year was phenomenal, and with families looking for something special to do over the Easter weekend, we are preparing for another big crowd.”

Following the Friday night Tony Cox concert, the traditional foot-stomping Grape Crushing festival will bring the curtain down on the summer harvest season, offering anyone a chance to try and stomp as much juice from 20kgs of grape as possible.

The Sunday food and wine festival will conclude the weekend, with the full range of wines from The Stables being paired with appropriate food, including Belgian chocolates that have been matched to the Pinotage.

The concept of ending the harvest season with an opportunity for interested members of the public to join in a grape stomping festival is well established traditional in France, and was warmly received by the KwaZulu-Natal wine loving community when it was started at The Stables wine estate last year.

This year the festival will include Easter egg hunts through the estates vineyards for the younger members of the families, a supervised children’s play area, and stalls selling numerous locally made foods and crafts, alongside the usual wine tasting at the estate.

Tickets for the Tony Cox concert are limited, so fans of the acoustic guitarist are urged to book tickets by phoning (033) 266 6781 or emailing info@stableswine.co.za
