Veritas Bronze medal for Springbok wine from The Stables

Nottingham Road – The Stables Wine Estate provided another morale boost for the Springbok rugby team preparing for the Rugby World Cup final on the weekend when the red blend produced specially for the Boks World Cup campaign won a Veritas medal.

The complex 2005 vintage blend called “The Time Is Now”, is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, aged in oak for 27 months, and was one of two red blends from The Stables that won bronze medals at the recent Veritas awards, the other being the popular Ezintabeni red blend.

Speaking from France, where he is supporting the Springboks on their World Cup campaign, winemaker Tiny Van Niekerk was thrilled to hear that “The Time Is Now” had been recognised at the Veritas awards.

“We are 100% confident that they are going to win the William Webb Ellis trophy, and to have the wine that we crafted for them recognised at the Veritas awards just ahead of the final is a very positive omen,” he added.

“A great deal of passion and effort went into the making of this wine, to reflect our vision of the Springboks and the calibre of John Smit’s team,” said Van Niekerk. “It’s a full-bodied substantial red wine that will hold it’s own against any meal, much like the Boks have performed in this world Cup,” he added.

The Veritas Awards is widely regarded as the premier platform for wine recognition, as well as being the oldest and best known wine competition. This year the judges tasted over 1900 wines from 327 participants, a growth of 14% on last years entry.

“The Time Is Now” wine was bottled and released just prior to the departure of the Springboks for the World Cup campaign, and was served at the Springboks farewell banquet at the Sandton Convention Center.

Last year, The Stables won a bronze Veritas medal for their 2005 Pinotage, and then made history for the fledgling wine industry in KwaZulu-Natal by scooping a medal for the Pinotage from their Greytown vineyards at the recent SA Young Wine Awards.

The first generation of wines from The Stables was produced from grapes grown under their supervision in the Western Cape. Now that their Greytown vineyards are fully productive, this year will see a full range of KwaZulu-Natal Wine of Origin products becoming available, including the recently released Sauvignon Blanc that won a medal at the Swiss International Airline Awards.
