KZN’s own wine estate, The Stables, has become uniquely involved as a Sharks supporter by rewarding the star players every week with a bottle of their popular product.

The estate, which is located outside Nottingham Road, is run by Tiny and Judy van Niekerk, both of whom are passionate Sharks supporters. They were keen to get involved with the team, and show the parallels between their wines being unique to KZN, and the team.

Every Monday at the team review session coach Dick Muir presents a number of awards to his players. These include his Man of the Match, and Awards for Best Defence, the Best Tackle/Biggest Hit, Try of the Match and any other appropriate award.

The Stables quickly saw the gap and presented the Sharks with some of their popular sparkling wine, Balgowan Bubbly, each bottle distinctively labeled with the Award for a particular match.

“We are really proud to be able to provide such a uniquely KZN award to the Sharks that excel at every game,” said winemaker Tiny Van Niekerk.

The Stables has defied their critics by turning out wines of exceptional quality from their estate on the Rosetta Road in the KZN midlands. Their Red Blend recently scooped four stars in the definitive Platter Guide, their Pinotage made history by earning a Veritas Bronze medal, while their Shiraz took home an award from the Swiss wine awards.

Tiny and Judy van Niekerk, who never miss a Sharks match, have also hinted that their may be more in store for Sharks fans. “Wait for the Brumbies match…”, said Van Niekerk.
