Nottingham Road – A weekend of diverse activity that will herald the end of the historic harvest at The Stables Wine Estate outside Nottingham Road will include a novel opportunity for members of the public to “stomp” their own grapes.

The Crushing Festival takes place at The Stables Wine Estate from Friday 30 March to Sunday 1 April, and will include a lavish dinner and concert by acoustic guitarist supreme Tony Cox on the Friday night.

The Saturday has been jammed with events aimed at the entire family, from the grape stomping competition, to a cheese and wine pairing, live music, a supervised children’s play area and a label designing competition, together with the chance to taste the full range of The Stables wines.

“The grape crushing competition is a first for KZN,” said Judy van Niekerk. “The idea is to produce as much juice from a specific quantity of grape in a barrel, using just your feet. We will measure the output from each participant to determine the winner.”

For the wine and food connoisseurs the award-winning Skye restaurant at the Fordoun hotel will host a culinary showcase lunch on Sunday 1 April, with the chef carefully matching food to wines from The Stables.

“The Crushing Festival is our celebration of what has been a historic harvest. It will result in a 2007 vintage wines of KZN wines of origin that we are sure will be exceptional quality, and further cement to reputation of KZN’s wine industry,” said van Niekerk,

“We also want to demystify wine!” she added. “Wine must be fun and accessible. That’s why this Festival is aimed at entertaining the whole family, and giving anyone a chance to “make” their own wine by stomping grapes.”

Entry to the event R25 per person over 18, children free. Entry into the crushing competition costs R60, and includes a free T shirt.
