Tony Cox to appear at The Stables Crushing Festival

Nottingham Road – Acoustic guitar supreme Tony Cox has been signed to perform at The Stables Wine Estate’s Crushing Festival outside Nottingham Road on Friday 30 March.

Cox, who will be the headline act at Splashy Fen in April, has just returned from a sell-out European tour, and will open the weekend-long Crushing Festival by performing at a lavish evening function at The Stables Wine Estate.

“We were thrilled to be able to secure Tony Cox for the Friday night dinner at the estate,” said Judy Van Niekerk. “He is a legend with his unique acoustic guitar style, and will be the perfect fit for what promises to be a really memorable evening at The Stables.”

Cox performed for the second time at the Lewes International Guitar Festival near Brighton followed by the Cornwall Folk Festival where he was described by one of the organisers as the hit of the festival. As a direct consequence to his appearances at these festivals Cox has been invited to perform at the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain 2007, which is the biggest festival of its kind in the UK.

In Germany he linked up with Peter Finger, one of Germany’s finest steel-string guitarists and also the owner of Acoustic Music Records, one of the biggest recording and publishing companies for the acoustic guitar in the world.

Cox recorded and performed for Finger at his new venue Lutherhaus in Osnabrueck and was promptly booked for Finger’s Open Strings International Guitar Festival in October 2007.

He then performed in Frankfurt and Leipzig where the audience called him back to the stage three times and presented him with a huge bouquet of flowers, as they usually only do at classical concerts – and a big carry-bag filled with chocolates, almond-spread, Germany’s version of Marmite, Arnica oil and Bach manuscripts!

“I never expected such a response to what I do over there,” says Cox. “‘I will have to spend nearly five months of the year abroad to take up all the opportunities presented to me on this last leg of my 2006 tour. The whole thing has been such an eye-opener and a huge encouragement for me.”

Cox will be jetting to Canada in their summer of 2007 after being handpicked from thousands of performers at a conference concert appearance. He also has engagements booked in the Northern hemisphere well into 2009.

“He is simply an entrancing performer who has that special knack of engaging all his audience while at the same time delivering a highly skilled and entertaining show”, said Laurence Hill, the Festival Director of the Lewes festival.

Cox’s latest DVD/CD release recorded live at the Grahamstown National Festival of the Arts was recently nominated in the best instrumental category at the South African Music Awards. This was his fifth nomination with two wins for Matabele Ants in 2001 and China in 2003.

Tickets for the evening cost R185, including the Tony Cox concert, a gourmet dinner with complimentary wines.
