The Stables Spring Vine Budding Festival

Nottingham Road - A lively crowd enjoyed the Spring Vine Budding Festival at The Stables Wine Estate outside Nottingham Road on Saturday September 30th, with popular guitarists Nibs van der Spuy and Guy Buttery adding to the occasion with their distinctive brand of acoustic music.

The mayor of Mooi River, councillor Siphiso Mkhuze enjoyed the occasion, along with Stella Khumalo, representing the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism, and Narend Singh, who formally opened The Stables Wine Estate in 2005.

The wine enthusiasts were treated to a tour of the cellars and the vineyards by winemakers Tiny and Judy van Niekerk, where they were shown the vines emerging from their dormant winter phase.

The wine lovers then spent the rest of the sunny afternoon enjoying the music and some of the fine wines on offer from the Estate, including their Chardonnay, Pinotage, Drakensberg Tawney and their award winning Shiraz.

The event also served as the formal launch of the province's first ever sparkling wine, named Balgowan Bubbly. This sparkling wine has a distinctive fruit-driven character, and proved to be popular with the wine lovers fortunate to be able to taste the first release.

"The Stables Wine Estate forms an important part of KwaZulu-Natal's tourism industry, and supports our drive to make the province South Africa's playground, " said Khumalo.

The Stables Wine Estate made history this year by releasing the first ever KZN Wine of Origin, with their innovative Pinotage Clariet Ros
é, shortly after being registered as the first official KwaZulu-Natal Wine Estate.

With viticulturalist
Diederik le Grange now on board The Stables Wine Estate has exciting plans for the near future.

"We want to destigmatise wine," said Tiny van Niekerk. "Wine should be fun and informal, and we want to make enjoying wine accessible to as many people as possible."
