The Stables Spring Vine Budding Festival launched

Durban - The Stables Wine Estate will host it's inaugural Spring Vine Budding Festival at the estate outside Nottingham Road on September 30th, as the pioneering winemakers prepare for their third season of producing fine wines from KwaZulu-Natal.

The festival will be a blend of fine wines and popular acoustic music, and a chance to share in the emergence of a number of new vines that have been planted at the estate, which will broaden the number of wines that carry the "Wine of Origin KZN" certification.

The Stables were the first estate to secure this status, and are still the only estate to be entitled to call their wine "KwaZulu-Natal wine of origin".

Winemakers Tiny and Judy van Niekerk came up with the idea of the Spring Vine Budding Festival to create an opportunity for wine lovers in the province to share in the snowballing success of The Stables, and to try and destigmatise wine.

“We want to break down the snobbery that is associated with wine," says Judy van Niekerk. "You don’t have to be a connoisseur to enjoy wine. We want to create a place where people feel that they can relax and drink wine. Our ethos is "making wine fun”.

The occasion will be perfect for the introduction of KZN’s first ever sparkling wine, called "Balgowan Bubbly", made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The next 2006 KwaZulu-Natal wine of origin wine to be released by The Stables Wine Estate will be next month and will be their Sauvignon Blanc, while their Pinotage and Merlot is in new French Oak barrel and will continue to mature in the cellar for another 10 months.

With the concert lined up for the late afternoon and  the early evening evening, the festival will create an opportunity for wine lovers to enjoy an afternoon of wine and music for just R95 each, which will include a carafe of wine, wineglass and the concert. A spitbraai, roasted vegetables and salad will be available at R85 per person.

"The passion for wine in KwaZulu-Natal is enormous, and we have really enjoyed producing this provinces first wines, and then sharing in the pleasure and recognition for these wines with the people of KZN. So this festival is a day that we want to share casually with the wine lovers of KZN, and make it an annual get-together", said Tiny van Niekerk.
