Cape stars set to crash KZN party at SA surfski champs

Durban - As entries for the FENN SA Surfski Champs to be held in Durban next week start to surge into the race HQ, the strong contingent of paddlers from the Western and Eastern Cape are determined to challenge the podiums in all the age groups.

“We are on a mission to crash the KZN party!” quipped Kenny Rice, who finished second to his brother Sean at the last edition of the Surfski world championships in France in 2019.

Rice is part of the ORCA training squad that pools the best elite paddlers in the Western Cape with emerging talent coming through the junior and Under 23 ranks, mixing marathon training sessions at Marina da Game and Milnerton with surfski training around the peninsula.

Rice himself has prioritised the event, having come tantalisingly close to winning a national surfski crown, but never been able to get onto the top step of the podium.

“I was third last year and second the year before, so hopefully I can complete the set of podium places this year,” he said. He has two second place finishes in the national double ski title decider with his brother Sean and Dom Notten, fuelling his desire to finally grab the elusive national title.

Rice will be part of a string Western Cape men’s contingent that will include a rested and recharged Stu MacLaren, Dom and Nicky Notten, the on-form Hart siblings Uli and Anders and a talented group of juniors.

“As a group we are really looking forward to this trip as it will give the youngsters a taste of what it is like going on a tour as a big group,” he said. “We will all be staying together and working together to get the most out of this trip.”

“Watch the Under 23 race” he added. “I reckon that with Josh (Fenn), Uli (Hart), and Hamish (Lovemore) and a bunch of others that will be right in the mix, I predict that three of them could be in the top six or seven overall.”

Rice said that they had been preparing for any conditions and working on their downwind skills.

“KZN can be quite flat during the winter months so we will have to see what we get on the day. We have been doing regular training sessions on the Miller’s Run, Milnerton to Melkbos and Bay crossings, so our downwind skills are sharp.

He added that Candice Murray was looking forward to a successful challenge for the women’s podium, coming off a successful MyLife Dusi where she won the mixed doubles and K2 race overall with Murray Starr.

“She is clued up on her downwinds and took three or four minutes off her personal best Millers Run recently,” said Rice.

Rice and the Cape contingent know that they will be viewed as a threat, despite the KZN regulars claiming that they know the conditions on the courses from DUC to Mdloti and DUC to Amanzimtoti like the back of their hands.

“There is a Cape raiding party heading for KZN next week,” said Rice.
