Sani Stagger & the Southern Lodestar Foundation team up
Underberg – As one of the Southern Drakensberg’s premier events, the Sani
Stagger will try to build on the work that the Southern Lodestar
Foundation (SLF) do in the area through their feeding programme when the
event raises funds to help improve infrastructure in seven of the area’s
crèches and schools.
Through the relationship developed at Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg, another
event run Running Man Adventures (RMA), the SLF identified the Underberg
region as one that could benefit from its ground-breaking feeding scheme.
RMA helped in identifying seven crèches that SLF could supply and this has
resulted in 470 children in the area receiving a daily meal of fortified
porridge. Through their monthly dealings with the crèches RMA felt that
there was more that they could do in growing this momentum that SLF had
“The SLF team use their logistics partner, Underberg Spar, as a base from
where RMA can then deliver the food to the seven crèches in the area and
we identified that there are many other issues that need to be addressed
as well,” RMA's Spurgeon Flemington said.
“So what we have decided to do is to take a donation from each runner at
this year’s Sani Stagger of R20 and put that towards infrastructural
upgrades at these crèches. With 1050 runners coming to the 2019 event this
seemingly small amount adds up quickly.
“Whether it be fixing kitchens, providing lockable and secure cupboards,
repairing buildings, it’s vital that the conditions that these children
are being cared for in are safe and hygienic.”
RMA will be rolling out this donation at the Sani Stagger this year and
then going forward UTD will also donate part of their entry fee to this
The intention is to make sure each project is completed prior to the
staging of the event so that runners see where their money is going before
they take part in the event.
“We are currently working on repairing the walls and roof of a building at
one crèche that was in urgent need or repair.
“We are hoping to have it finished before Stagger so that we can show
runners what we have done with their money at prize giving.
“That is the plan going forward," he added.
"We will also be having the inaugural SLF Fun Run/Walk at this year’s
Stagger. Last year we had a trial run in aid of Clouds of Hope Children’s
"However, as Clouds is now one of the seven crèches/schools falling within
the SLF feeding programme, we decided to expand the scope of the Fun
Run/Walk under the umbrella of SLF to benefit all seven crèches and
“SLF will be there taking entries and educating people on what they do but
the proceeds will go to the infrastructural project.
“The SLF Fun Run/Walk is a great addition to the event with under 12’s
paying R20 and over 12’s paying R50 to enter.”
