Czech siblings round out strong Ozzie Gladwin field

Pietermaritzburg – The eleventh hour arrival of the Czech Republic siblings Jakub Adam and Anna Adamová, who will paddle with Natal Canoe Club (NCC) locals Cam Schoeman and Abby Adie respectively, are relishing being back on South African soil and looking forward to getting back onto KZN’s rivers when they tackle Sunday’s Ozzie Gladwin Canoe Marathon, presented by Parklane Superspar.

Both Adam and Adamová are no stranger to South Africa having spent large portions of the past three years here preparing for events such as the Dusi and Non Stop Dusi Canoe Marathons however this trip has a little added incentive as they both look to get the most out of their month-long stay and prepare as best as possible for their first ever truly competitive Dusi next year with this weekend’s Ozzie Gladwin the first of three important build-up events on their radar.

“We went straight from the airport to Camps Drift for the dice and Cam (Schoeman) and Jakub (Adam) went on to win, finishing ahead of a strong Andy (Birkett) and Sbonelo (Zondi) so they were very chuffed and are definitely looking forward to this weekend’s Ozzie Gladwin!” said Adam’s local mentor Craig Mustard.

Adam’s pairing with Schoeman will have many watching curiously as the untested yet exciting duo look to pile on the pressure on their more favoured rivals having furthered their case to be considered genuine contenders at this weekend’s 26km clash, and beyond, at Thursday evening’s NCC Pre-Ozzie Gladwin Dice where they overcame early Dusi favourites Andy Birkett and Sbonelo Zondi – a result which will give them good confidence heading into Sunday’s clash.

For Birkett and Zondi – early Dusi 2014 favourites – this weekend’s Ozzie Gladwin represents an ideal opportunity to further their already successful partnership after they claimed a record-breaking Non Stop Dusi victory earlier this year.

Birkett and Zondi’s fellow Dusi 2014’s ‘big three’ combinations – Lance Kime and Thulani Mbajwa as well as Hank McGregor and Jasper Mocké – will also be looking for a top performance this weekend to continue the development of their newly established partnerships.

Kime, 2013 Dusi winner and his 2008 fellow Dusi victor, Mbanjwa, will hope to build on the solid platform they laid for themselves at this year’s Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon whilst McGregor – who, along with Birkett and Schoeman, is one of three former and current World Marathon champs in this weekend’s field – and his Western Cape-based surfski ace partner, Mocké, will also be hoping for a positive hit out after their victorious efforts at CMH East Rand Vaal River Canoe Marathons last weekend.

Also hoping to be in with a shout this weekend are the widely talked about pairing of Jacques Theron and Shaun Griffin whilst Lucas Mthalane and Mmeli Cele and Kwanda Mhlope and Zonele Nzuza will undoubtedly lead the Change a Life Academy charge as they look to kick-off their KZN element of their Dusi preparations.

The women’s encounter is all set to be the Adie/Adamová show as the pair are expected to dominate proceedings from start to finish as they seek their share of the massive prize money pot on offer.

Despite her last minute arrival, Adamová showed her hard work back home in the Czech Republic since her and Adie’s title winning efforts at the Hansa Fish at the end of September has been superb when she and Adie powered to a remarkable fifth place overall and were the first ladies crew home in Thursday evening’s dice.

“Abby (Adie) and Anna (Adamová) really were strong on Thursday!” exclaimed NCC High Performance coach and coordinator, Mustard. “They were a maximum of a minute behind the men’s winners and they look well on track for a top fifteen, maybe even a top ten, at Ozzie Gladwin this weekend!

“They’ve got quite a big trail run on Saturday so that might affect them a little on the portage on Sunday but paddlingwise they are just unbelievably strong at the moment.

“They should win on Sunday because, in my opinion, there isn’t another crew in the country at the moment who can match them!”

Adie and Adamová, along with each and every other of the large field expected on the start line on Sunday, will be very excited by the recent news that there will be a ten cumec water release out of Albert Falls Dam making for an ideal water level for the 21km river section down the upper uMngeni River which, together with the expected cool temperatures, should make for near perfect conditions for the Dusi Canoe Marathon qualifier and seeding race.

The 2013 Ozzie Gladwin Canoe Marathon, presented by Parklane Superspar, takes place on Sunday 10 November. More info can be found at www.ozziegladwin.co.za and entries can be submitted at http://ozziegladwin.co.za/entryform.html
