Prato starts Siyaphambili surfski series with a bang

Durban Regular Durban surfski pacesetter Gene Prato got the Siyaphambili Surfski Series started with an explosive victory in the Indwe Risk Services Singles race on Sunday.

Prato cantered home almost three minutes ahead of second-placed Brendon Waters on a course altered to suit the heavy weather conditions battering Durban on Sunday, keeping the paddlers in the shelter of Durban Bay for a multi-lapped course.

Siyaphambili club Under 16 star Lungelo Shange provided the new host club with the result to toast as he finished a solid sixth overall.

Former surfski world champion Hayley Nixon, who is also a passionate trustee of the Siyaphambili project, made a statement about her return to her best racing form by winning the women's title comfortably.

In the short course race another Siyaphambili star hit the headlines when Kwanele Banda was first back to the finish at DUC two minutes clear of Mikaila Brown, who was also the first woman to finish the short course.

The race was hosted and administered by the Siyaphambili Surfski club as part of the broad project to empower the youngsters from south of Durban with the skills needed to administer their club and successfully host races.

The three-race series moves onto the Citadel double ski race next Sunday, before concluding with the popular relay format race a week later.
