Three race plan for Siyaphambili surfski series

Durban The popular annual spring surfski series based at Durban Undersea Club gets under way on Sunday 3 October with three races on consecutive Sundays and a new identity as the thriving Siyaphambili Surf Ski Club takes charge of the series.

Started as a development initiative to take Surfski paddling to within the reach of eager youngsters south of Durban, the paddlers have  improved markedly in the past few years and this year celebrated Lungelo Shange's selection to compete as part of the South African team to the Olympic Hopes regatta in the Czech Republic earlier this month.

Coached by Mhlengi Mngadi and Toti Canoe Club coach Dean Chiazzari, the project has been the brainchild of the Durban Undersea Club and the Paddling Academy under the guidance of Jacqui Boyd, and the club is now formally registered with the KZN Canoe Union.

With many of their paddlers  starting to feature higher up the standings at regular surfski series races, Boyd says the series will give the men and women a chance to learn the skills needed to administer the club and run races.

"They will run each race, right down to doing the required Covid check-ins and ensuring full compliance, all the safety checks and doing the lucky draws," said Boyd.

Based on the format successfully started in 2019, the series will shift it's focus every week to concentrate attention on single skis, double skis and then team relay format racing.

The races take best advantage of the prevailing weather conditions and wherever possible they take paddlers down to the open ocean off the Bluff from the race base at the Point.

With the surfski season building towards the popular Dischem Pete Marlin race in East London at the end of October, the Durban surfski community is sure to turn up in numbers to support the trio of races on the first three weekends of October.
