Enduro junkies thrive on reworked Karkloof course
Karkloof - The 2021 Sappi Karkloof Classic Trail Festival got underway
in pristine conditions on Saturday as the adrenalin junky STIHL Enduro
riders got the first of the competitive events underway on Saturday.
The stages were given a revamp recently which was well received by the
riders on Saturday as they bombed down the five stages amongst the Sappi
It was a day for defending champion Kira Duncan to savour as he
obliterated the field through the five stages to finish a minute ahead of
second place Ross Kew while Cameron Morewood finished in third place
Karkloof is Duncan's home track and the local managed to show his
impressive form as he looks to national events coming up later in the
"I've been putting in some decent training in the build up to some big
events later in the year," Duncan said. "We've got SA Champs and Western
Province Champs so I used today as a good training ride for that.
"It wasn't too difficult but the trails and the weather conditions turned
out really well which was great.
"It was prime out there and I saw a lot of happy faces which was brilliant
to see especially because I think we've put together a really nice course
made up of some really nice stages."
Despite the training aspect to Duncan's ride on Saturday, he knew it was
an important event in the greater scheme of things going forward into a
big block of events.
"I was very, very happy with how it went and it was really important to me
to use this as a good training ride and whack it as hard as I can!"
For someone who has grown up on the trails of the Karkloof, Duncan is
excited with the direction that the enduro discipline is moving in and
looks forward to seeing it grow.
"I've seen the enduro community grow a lot especially in the Karkloof and
more riders seem to be coming out more relaxed and just enjoying the
"Karkloof is hugely important for me as a rider and I know this place like
the back of my hand but there are new places to explore and there is just
so much potential for trails throughout the area."
In the women's race it was Sabine Thies who was the fastest over the five
stages of the race to claim a dominant victory of over two and a half
Thies won the race ahead of Teah Gundry in second and Chloe Allison in
The morning saw excited runners and riders

the various distances that will be tackled again on Sunday.
