Sappi Karkloof Classic Challenge maintains support for Hawkstone School ECD

Karkloof – As riders and runners continue to stream to the Karkloof to take advantage of the innovative three week Sappi Karkloof Classic Challenge window to ride and run the trails following the cancellation of the annual event at the start of lockdown, the Early Childhood Development initiative in the Karkloof valley was also able to celebrate the ongoing support from the event and its backers.

The Karkloof Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) at Hawkstone Primary School has been a long-standing beneficiary of the annual trail festival. To coincide with the unusual November scheduling of the Challenge event, youngsters from the school gathered at the Karkloof Country Club for a morning of festivities that underscored the races’ commitment to the programme.

For the fourteen scholars the morning was spent on a two kilometre walk through the neighbouring forests with their teacher Londiwe Dladla and her assistant teacher, both of whose salaries are provided by the Karkloof Club through proceeds from the athletes that visit that area to run and ride, before they enjoyed a hearty meal and time to play on the jumping castles.

“The relationship between Sappi, the Karkloof Country Club and the Karkloof ECD Centre has grown from strength to strength, and we are thrilled to see the impacts of this in the classroom with our ECD children excelling as they enter into Grade One,” said the ECD Centre’s founder, Mary Gray.

“Having the support of Sappi and the KCC behind our teachers, especially their formal training, has also elevated what we can do with the children – and is an investment in the teaching skills of the Karkloof community.”

“The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the Sappi Karkloof Classic mini-Challenge and couldn’t stop talking about the trip! The buffs were an absolute winner and they certainly enjoyed tucking into the fabulous lunch! I think this was the first time they had experienced a jumping castle - what a treat!”

“Early Childhood Development is one of Sappi’s priority areas in community support, as we understand how important strong foundations are for successful futures – particularly in the first six months to three years of a child’s life,” said Sappi Communications Manager Zelda Schwalbach.

“When the KCC started supporting the Karkloof ECD Centre some years ago, we were eager to be active participants in this relationship too.

"It was lovely to be able to spend some time with the children on the trails too, as often when we do site visits there isn’t any proper time for engaging with the children. The trails in the Sappi forests provide such a natural way to interact, and we enjoyed getting our heart rates up with the little ones!”

“The KCC has been supporting the Karkloof ECD Centre at Hawkstone school for some years now by sponsoring the salaries of the teachers as well as the formal training of senior teacher Londiwe Dladla,” said Karkloof Country Club chair Andrew Nicholson.

“We have also assisted with various fund and resource raising initiatives, but up until now – we hadn’t had the children over to the Karkloof Country Club itself.

“What a blast! Watching the kids have such a fantastic time both on the trails and at the Club was extremely heart-warming, and we would like to make this more the norm than the exception. We intend to formalise the ECD classes visits to the Club in 2021 as more regular occurrence, with transport, lunch and activities sponsored by the KCC,” added Nicholson.
