Keep dreaming of Eston MTB glory

Eston – Current Junior Girls Cross Country, Marathon, Road and Time Trial national champion Tiffany Keep is hoping that she can make a big statement by winning the overall women’s crown at the upcoming Illovo Eston MTB Challenge on Sunday, 5 August.

The young Thomas More learner has been one of the up-and-coming stars of cycling in South Africa for a number of years and will be hoping that she can finally make that demanding step up to the top step of a marathon podium.

“I would love to get back on the podium again this year at Eston,” the Silverback/Volvo star said. “I have been the youngest rider on the podium and it would be great to win the race but with such a strong field expected I would be happy to finish in the top three.

“There are going to be a number of top riders there as always because Eston is always one of the most prestigious titles to win, so it is going to be an exciting race.”

Keep’s second place at Eston in 2017 was a solid result for the youngster and she is hoping for more of the same at an event that she, and many other top mountain bikers, hold in high regard.

“Of all of the marathon races that I do, I think that Eston must be one of the highlights because of the great course and the quality of the field that we get there.

“I have become accustomed now to racing those longer distances on a mountain bike so I am enjoying these marathon races more.

“To come up against riders that are stronger than me is the ultimate challenge and that is something that I always look forward to,” she added.

The 60km Illovo Eston MTB marathon is punchy and exciting with many of the elite riders fighting it out right up until the end sprint. With Keep’s cross country pedigree she feels that the route is designed to benefit her.

“The short, sharp climbs and the amount of single track plays into our hands as cross country riders and although the course is tough it is fast.”

Keep’s form on her mountain bike and road bike has been impressive in 2018 and following a busy first half of the year she is in the process of preparing for the UCI Cross Country World Championships later in the year.

“I am still feeling good and have been racing well this year so far.

“Eston is going to be a good form tester for me as I start preparing for the cross country World Championships,” Keep explained.
