Unique family K3 to make history in The Unlimited Dusi

Pietermaritzburg – In amongst the entries flooding into The Unlimited Dusi office ahead of the closing of the normal entries on Monday evening 30 January is a truly unique K3 entry made up three generations of the same family.

The trio from Durban North comprises grandfather Tony Evered-Hall (68), father Mark Evered-Hall  (43)  and his son Joshua Evered-Hall  (15) who will set out to become the first ever triple generation crew to finish the legendary three day race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban that starts at Camps Drift on 16 February.

The race has deep significance for the family as Tony, who did his first Dusi in 1971 in an age when the paddlers made their own kayaks, suffered a serious heart attack after completing the first stage of the 2010 Dusi and couldn't finish the race.

"That incident made me realise that time is not always on your side," said Mark Evered-Hall. "Since that scare I am thrilled to see that my dad is fitter and healthier than ever before, and that in itself makes the idea of completing this three-generation K3 even more special."

Mark has completed 18 Dusis, six more than his father Tony, and they will have Joshua, who is a grade 10 pupil at Westville Boys High School, to complete the unique family trio.

The three paddling enthusiasts, who paddle in the colours of Crusaders Canoe Club, are passionate about making a contribution to the 61 year race history.

"This is has been a long time dream of the Evered-Hall family as this race is so very much part of us," said Mark Evered-Hall. "This race is special, and has become such a big part of South African heritage, just like the Comrades Marathon."

Few K3s have been brave enough to take on The Unlimited Dusi canoe marathon, as these lengthy craft battle to squeeze between the rocks that litter the 120km of river between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

The Gandy brothers completed a K3 Dusi with one of their sons, making up a two-generation crew that made history. However the triple-generation crew of the Evered-Halls will take their feat to a whole new level.

Normal entries for The Unlimited Dusi canoe marathon close at 6pm on Monday 30 January, after which late entries will be taken as a penalty of R150 per paddle.

The Unlimited Dusi canoe marathon from Camps Drift, Pietermaritzburg to Blue Lagoon, Durban takes place on 16-18 February 2012. More info can be found at www.dusi.co.za
