Inaugural Elite Tournament a resounding success

Durban – The newly formed Sunfoil KZN DSR Elite Tournament concluded recently with the event being the pinnacle event of the successful Sunfoil KZN DSR Hubs Tournament at Michaelhouse in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

The tournament pitted teams from all over the country against one another in the Under 15 and Under 19 age categories. Ultimately it was the Easterns Under 19 team and the KZN Under 15 side that came out on top in their divisions.

The Under 19 age category had teams from KwaZulu-Natal, Western Province, Easterns and Gauteng.

There were some notable performances with Western Province’s Theko Mahlase producing the best bowling figures of the tournament with a return of 6 for 39. Sihle Dlamini from Easterns was the best batsman of the Under 19 tournament, he scored 130 runs at an average of 65 and top score of 69 not out.

In the Under 15 competition KZN’s own Aryan Gopalan was the top ranked batsman. The youngster racked up 197 runs at an average of 197 and a top score of 103 not out.

In the bowling department Amagile Twani was the best. He finished with 14 wickets with best figures of 7 for 42.

Sane Mzimela, Hubs/RPC Development Manager at KZN Cricket, and organiser of the tournaments was delighted that the tournaments were a success and was pleased to see the players enjoying themselves in a competitive atmosphere.

“It was a fantastic week for us and it was brilliant to see the excitement shown from all the players and coaches,” Mzimela said.

“I think that a tournament like this goes a long way in helping to upskill our coaches and the boys because they were exposed to situations that they are not used to.

“Time cricket is a format that a lot of them wouldn’t have played before and it’s great for them to learn new skills from this.”

There are a number of partners involved in making the tournament as successful as it is and to see the growth of it is only going to help in bringing more teams to KZN in the future.

“All the people that were involved for many hours organising the tournament, the umpires, scorers, selectors, Michaelhouse, we are grateful for your efforts.

CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom is excited to see how much the next generation of cricketer will benefit from tournaments like this.

"We are temporary custodians of this beautiful game and we have to leave it in a better state than what we received it in," he said.

"This tournament is all about planting the seeds for the next generation’s trees.

"It was fantastic to see the passion with which everyone participated in the tournament and the way in which the new format was embraced by all. We are extremely grateful for all our sponsors, in particular KZN DSR and Sunfoil."

The KZN Cricket Union wanted to highlight the contributions made by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, the Willowton Group, the Sport Development Trust, Cricket South Africa, Kookaburra, Michaelhouse, eThekwini Municipality, the Institute of Learning and Motivation South Africa and Sedgars Sports.
