KZN cricket mourns the loss of talented Hub coach

Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union extends their condolences to the family and friends of talented Umlazi Hub assistant coach Thula Ngema who passed away after a brief illness in hospital on Saturday.

The 32 year old Ngema was admitted to hospital on Thursday last week with a significant blood clot which caused him to have a stroke and unfortunately the severity of the stroke led to his death after a short stay in hospital.

Ngema was a talented cricketer in his own right and was given a cricket scholarship to Glenwood High from Umlazi Comm Tech. Following high school he was awarded another scholarship to study and play cricket at the University of Zululand.

He remained in cricket when he left university and became part of the Hub structures in KZN working under the likes of Kenneth Mafunga, Elvis Govender and most recently Xolani Gasa.

He had been at the Umlazi Hub for just six months following a period with the Reservoir Hills Hub previously.

“He played KZN Under 17 and represented both Uthungulu Cricket Club and Umlazi Cricket Club which showed that his passion for the game started at a tender age.

“He was always a reserved man and would let his actions do the talking rather than his words, he was very dedicated to the game of cricket and loved coaching,” Sane Khuzwayo, Hubs and RPC Development Manager at KZN Cricket said.

“He was very involved in the game throughout Umlazi and he will be sorely missed.”
