Bragging rights up for grabs in KZN derby

Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal province will be divided in two when Hollywoodbets KZN Inland and Hollywoodbets KZN Coastal go head-to-head this week in the CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup and CSA Provincial One Day Challenge at the Pietermaritzburg Oval.

Both sides will be looking to claim bragging rights in the much anticipated KZN derby as both sides are looking to climb up their respective tables after indifferent starts to their red ball campaigns.

The encounter will be a motivated one as both sides are still chasing their first wins of the 3-day Cup. KZN Inland and Coastal are both placed second from the bottom of the standings having played four and three matches apiece in their respective pools.

Heading into the derby, the bowlers on both sides might fancy their chances with the batting

KZN Inland fast bowler Graham Hume will be one player to look out for as he has proven to be a tricky customer with the ball. Hume has been the chief destroyer taking 11 wickets in just four matches with best figures of 4-50.

On the other hand, KZN Coastal Keith Dudgeon is also on 11 wickets with best match figures of nine for 123 against North West at Potchefstroom. Dudgeon’s 11 wickets in the campaign have come at an impressive average of just 16 runs conceded per wicket.

Both teams have not quite capitalised with the bat throughout their respective campaigns and that influences their positions on the log.

KZN Inland Captain Luke Schlemmer will walk into the PMB Oval as the leading run scorer of the two teams. Schlemmer is currently ranked fifth on the leading run-getters with 300 runs.

Schlemmer is tied with three other batsmen to have scored two centuries in the competition thus far, the most in the tournament.

With an average of 60, Schlemmer and wicketkeeper Grant Roelofsen have been the anchors of the Inland batting lineup. Together the middle order batters have scored a bulk of the teams runs and will be difficult customers for the Coastal bowlers this week.

21-year-old Blayde Capell has also been in good form with the bat in the 3-day format for KZN Coastal boasting an average of 40 in first-class cricket with a high score of 98 against Border at Kingsmead.

Meanwhile, Roelofsen is chasing his tenth victim, the KZN Inland keeper is sitting on nine first class dismissals this season.

"Obviously the boys are really excited about the derby but we don't want to treat it differently to any other game," Inland coach Shane Burger mentioned.

"We get Grant (Roelofsen), (Lwandiswa) Zuma and Cody Chetty for this one - Cody playing his first three day game for Inland which is great - so that helps after we lost (Kerwin) Mungroo to the Paarl Rocks.

"I am hoping for a strong response from the boys after what happened against Notherns so they is a lot of motivation to do well."

Inland have enjoyed better fortune in the 50 over competition and sit second in group A while the coastal neighbours are fifth in group B.

Luke Schlemmer is currently the tournaments second highest run scorer with 236 runs at an average of 78. Schlemmer's team mate Sohail Mahmoud is currently fifth in the runs standings with 183.

Coastal captain Khalipa Cele is Coastal's highest run scorer with 130 runs at an average of 43.

On the bowling front Inland's Gareth Dukes is tied with four other bowlers on nine wickets for the tournament but is second on the averages list with a balls per wicket ratio of 14.66.

Coastals speedster Daryn Dupavillon is their best bowler in the white ball tournament. He has taken five wickets in the two games that he has played at an average of 14.

Across the two squads there will eleven players that have played for the Dolphins in various formats of the game on display.
