Breede 2016 to host SA K3 champs

Robertson – The 2016 Breede River Canoe Marathon that takes place between Robertson and Swellendam on 3 and 4 September has been confirmed as the host of the SA K3 Championships for 2016.

The two-day event through the Overberg is the culmination of the Western Cape's K2 (doubles) racing season, and traditionally attracts the best K2 crews from across the country as the scale of the Breede River suits K2 marathon racing tactics.

After a dry winter last year the Breede season that started after the Berg Marathon in July has seen substantially better water levels, and organisers are confident that the drought-affected river conditions experienced at last year's race won’t be repeated.

With Canoeing South Africa awarding the event the rights to host the SA K3 Championships once again, this news will be well received by the crews planning to travel to the Breede with their three-seater craft.

The organisers have stressed that they will accommodate both K2 and K3 classes at the event, along with the die-hards who prefer to race in K1s, but added that the K2s will enjoy the central focus of the event, and the large K3 field expected will probably start sometime after the K2s and will not affect the traditionally tight K2 racing.

Entries for the event have already opened online at the race website, and normal entries can be lodged until midnight non Tuesday 23 August.

The first stage consists of 37km from outside Robertson to Riggton Farm near Bonnievale, which includes technical tests at the Goudmyn sliding weir and low level bridges and Secunda weir. The final stage is 33,5km to the Kam’bati Resort outside Swellendam.

The 2016 Breede River Canoe Marathon takes place on 3 and 4 September. More information can be found at www.breedemarathon.co.za
