Deutsche Schule BMX trio soar at BMX World Champs

Durban - With the UCI BMX World Championships just days away the excitement and interest is growing rapidly at the Deutsche Schule in Cowies Hill, which is gearing up to support their unusually strong representation at the sports highest competitive platform.

The small niched school is celebrating the achievement of having no less than three pupils preparing to take part in the World Championships – brothers Axel and Liam Webster and Maya Rawlins.

Alex and Liam’s father Sydney, a former World Champs competitor himself, is at the helm of the gathering supporters fleet, however just a step behind him is the three’s very proud principal, Ruth Böhmer.

“They work very hard and are extremely dedicated”, she said. “We are very proud of them and we wish them everything of the best.”

Some of the familiar voices the trio will hear amongst the many cheers of the crowd will be those of their own staff and peers. “We will be up there supporting them on one of the days” promised Böhmer. “Liam is in my Grade 7 class and we will be taking our Grade 7’s up to support.”

“We hope they thoroughly enjoy their week and we will be thinking of them,” Böhmer added.
Having recently spent four and a half weeks in Germany on a training and racing adventure, Axel and Liam gained invaluable exposure to the European circuit and styles.

This did however come at a small price for poor Liam. “Having missed his exams due his trip overseas, he had to write these during the holidays”, said sympathetic Böhmer.

“It was such a fantastic opportunity that we just had to make a plan”, she added. “Preventing them from going would have been completely unfair by us.”

For Maya, far newer to the sport having only started riding a couple weeks before this year’s Nationals, her preparations have had a more local base with Sydney Webster taking her under his training wing.

“I think she must have caught the bug from the Webster boys and Sydney has been great in training her”, said Maya’s mom Annemarie.

“Being so new she’s learning all the time, there have been a number of falls in the process but she never gives up and always gives of her best”, she added.

Adding her voice to the trio’s supporters, Annemarie offered her words of support to her daughter. “Go for it girl! It might be a little intimidating but I know you can do it!””

The UCI BMX World Championships takes place at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg from 29 July to 1 August. More information can be found at www.bmxworldchampspmb.co.za
