Hungarian ace Boros back for Berg 2017

Paarl  - Hungarian star paddler Adrián Boros has dropped a bombshell by being the first paddler to enter the 2017 Berg River Canoe Marathon from 12 to 15 July, after stunning the event by racing onto the podium on his Berg debut last year.

Boros, who won the ICF Canoe Marathon K2 world title in 2015, edging out South African defending champions Hank McGregor and Jasper Mocké, has been a regular visitor to South African shores, and has taken a liking to the style of training and racing shown by the local elite athletes at major domestic events.

With the 2017 marathon world champs in Pietermaritzburg in September, Boros plans to spend even more time in the country getting used to the Camps Drift layout, and is not scared off by the demands of the 240 km Berg Marathon just two months before the world title decider.

“I like to race in South Africa, and I think the Berg is one of the best races,’ said Boros, shortly after winning his national selections race and securing his place at the European Marathon Champs.

“I think the Berg will be really good for me,” added the 26 year old from Tolna in Hungary. “It doesn’t have too much running, but lots of paddling!

“Last year I didn't know anything about the race, but this year is different. I know the distance now and I have a better idea about how to save my energy.

“The race is very technical and tactical so I hope that I can remember some of the technical areas of the river,” said Boros.

He added that the tree-laced second stage from Zonquasdrift to Bridgetown was his biggest concern, as local knowledge plays a bit role over that section.

“I hope I can follow someone, because there are lots of tree blocks and it is a tricky section.

“We can practice before the race so I hope I don’t get any surprises on the second day,” said Boros.

After finishing third in a competitive race last year, Boros says he will be delighted to get back onto the podium again.

“I will be fit by that time because it's just after the European championships. I hope I can reach the podium again, but you never know,” Boros added.

The Berg River Canoe marathon starts in Paarl on 12 July and ends at Velddrif on 15 July. More information can be found at
